Statewide candidates in 2012 and 2013 participated in the Virginia Tech Debate
Gillespie has accepted 7 other forthcoming debates; Warner has yet to agree to a debate in Virginia
LORTON — Ed Gillespie today accepted an invitation from Virginia Tech President Timothy Sands to participate in a 2014 Virginia Senate debate co-sponsored by Virginia Tech and WDBJ7 of Roanoke. The proposed dates are October 14, 15, or 22nd. Mark Warner, in his previous two campaigns, agreed to debates in nearby Roanoke.
Speaking about the Virginia Tech Debate, Ed Gillespie said, “I’m eager to continue the tradition of the last two statewide elections in participating in the Virginia Tech debate this Fall and hope that Senator Warner will join me. It’s important to give a voice to the region and to engage university students in the political process, as the successful Virginia Tech debates in our last two statewide elections did.”
Gillespie and Warner participated in the Virginia Bar Association Debate in West Virginia on Saturday. Video of the debate is available here.
Virginia Tech Professor and WDBJ7 Political Analyst Bob Denton said, “This was two well-seasoned individuals. And I thought it was a substantive debate.”
Larry Sabato observed, “Civil debate. Much better than hyper-partisan GOV ones last year.”
Gillespie has previously accepted invitations to participate in:
- The Fairfax Chamber of Commerce debate
- “The People’s Debate” in Richmond Oct. 13, co-sponsored by the AARP and the League of Women Voters
- A debate proposed by the Danville Register & Bee
- A debate co-sponsored by the Loudoun County, Greater Reston, Prince William and Fredericksburg chambers of commerce
- A debate hosted by the George Mason School of Policy, Government and International Affairs and the Center for State & Local Government Leadership in partnership with the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce and the Arlington Chamber of Commerce
- A debate to be held at the University of Virginia in October, hosted by the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy
- A debate to be held at James Madison University, hosted by Virginia21 and the JMU Student Government Association.
