LORTON – U.S. Senate Candidate Ed Gillespie today issued the following statement in regard to the start of Ramadan, which begins on Saturday at sunset:
“As my Islamic friends begin observing Ramadan tomorrow night, I wish them and all in their community a blessed month. The freedom to express one’s faith and worship is one of our most cherished freedoms. Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom ‘that all men shall be free to profess, and by argument to maintain, their opinion in matters of religion, and that the same shall in no wise diminish, enlarge, or affect their civil capacities.’ As Muslims around our Commonwealth, and across the globe, abstain from their physical needs to refocus on their faith, I hope they have a blessed and peaceful Ramadan.”
